A dedicated student from the very beginning, Swami Vishnudevananda walked 10 miles roundtrip every day through the jungles of Kerala, India, to attend school. As a young man, he studied at the Sivananda Ashram in Rishikesḥ, becoming ordained as a monk and embarking on a path of spiritual enlightenment and teaching that he would continue until his dying day on November 9, 1993. Swami Vishnudevananda’s achievements include serving as a professor with the Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Forest Academy and founding Sivananda Yoga Vedanta Centres, the global network of ashrams and yoga institutions. Swami Vishnudevananda also made an impact in the worlds of social politics and popular culture as a prominent proponent of world peace and unity in diversity. He also generally promoted love as a way to further the common goals of the human race. His teachings were extremely influential throughout the 1960s and 1970s, inspiring public figures such as the Beatles, Yoko Ono, and Peter Sellers.
